Game 88 - vs. The Clubhouse|
The Os took another step toward dominating the C- league. With a thrilling 54-51 victory over The Clubhouse, the Os kept alive their shot to take the summer league title. With 2 games to go in the season, the Os are a mere 2 games behind the leaders. Perhaps the victory over The Clubhouse is a harbinger for a new era of Os domination.
Enough about the chase for the title... On to the game.
In a challenging first half, the Os held close to The Clubhouse. By halftime, the Os had a 19-18 lead. Os fans were concerned about a second half letdown, but it was not to be. With a barrage of sharpshooting, good passing, and dribble penetration by Roster Guard and Lil' Joe, the Os managed to build an 18 point lead. Disbelieving Os players and spectators began to wonder if the scoreboard was malfunctioning.
However, the big lead did not last long. The Clubhouse began to press and force the tempo of the game out of the Os' comfort zone. Over a span of 5 minutes, the lead was cut to one. However, down the stretch, the free throw line heroics of Roster Guard and Duggo managed to preserve the lead. With 8 seconds to go, the lead was down to two, but the Os had the ball. In typical gutsy Os style, Lil' Joe threw long and Roster Guard helped to keep the ball inbounds, allowing the Os to secure it and go to the free throw line. All that was left was an unsuccessful desperation heave by The Clubhouse and the Os had secured their 5th victory.
The whole Os team contributed to breaking the third longest losing streak in Os history (14 games). New team records were set for points scored in a game, field goal percentage, free throws made and attempted, and assists. Mr. Smooth scored 7 points. Big D came up with a critical rebound to help slow down a Clubhouse rally. Steve-O asserted control over the paint with his rebounds (and fouls).
The O-phy voting reflected the superior performances of several Os. E-Bomb and Lil' Joe pulled in one vote apiece for their dishing of dimes (4 and 5 respectively - 5 assists ties the team record). The Giant put in a steady performance in the middle with 9 points and 8 rebounds (although his O-phy votes were marred by controversy - the LAPD may need to look into this). Duggo got 2 votes on a day where he tied his career high for points (10) and set an Os record for free throw makes without a miss (4). When all was said and done, Roster Guard took home the O-phy for his remarkable and steadying 20 point performance. That total marked the second highest total in Os history, but his clutch shooting down the stretch really won him the O-phy.
